Pier Out of Sea

1996

An interactive trip down Southport Pier, developed in collaboration with a range of local people during a 2 month residency at the Atkinson Art Gallery in Southport. Using the pier as a metaphor for the history of this relatively recent town, the piece allowed users to travel up and down the pier and through history by means of the pier train. The piece contained recent and archive material and offered users the chance to explore postcards, newspaper articles, arcade games and personal recollections dating back to 1860.

The piece was exhibited at the Atkinson Gallery in 1996 (The Year of the Pier) as part of Visionfest, the Merseyside Visual Arts Festival and has subsequently been shown at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston.
